California Prohibits Octopus Farming

Assembly Bill No. 3162 signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom bans the aquaculture of octopuses for consumption, making California the second state to do so after Washington. The ban addresses animal welfare and environmental concerns, as octopuses are intelligent, conscious beings capable of experiencing emotions and learning. The move is proactive, with no known large-scale octopus farming in the state. The ban also aims to prevent pollution and algal blooms caused by nitrogen and phosphorus runoff from octopus aquaculture.
